Event Description

Would you like to be more involved? Here's your chance to join the habitat crew and do some hands on conservation work!

The West Virginia Deer Association is hosting a habitat day in conjunction with the West Virginia Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers at Burnsville WMA on September 7th from 8am-2pm.  Volunteers will be needed for Non Native Invasive Species(NNIS) removal, mostly consisting of autumn olive, multi flora rose, and tree of heaven in a previous edge cut and field edges. Through removing these we are promoting the growth of native early succession species as well as the release of already present native species, which wildlife are more adapted to using. We will also be girdling trees in a burn unit to release better trees and allow more light to the ground promoting herbaceous plant growth in the understory and further developing a savannah like habitat structure that isn't common on the WMA for multiple wildlife species to use.

Please RSVP by September 5th so we can get a head count of volunteers to better plan accommodations and what we can accomplish. Please bring long sleeve shirts, pants, boots, hat, gloves, and eye protection. Water and snacks will be provided, but it's always a good idea to bring additional to stay hydrated.  A light lunch will be provided by the WV Deer Association at completion of the work.

All volunteers receive the official WVDA Habitat Crew t-shirt!

This is a great opportunity to meet some wonderful folks while performing awesome work on your public lands! We can't wait to see you there!
